Every week brings new jobs, emails, documents, and task lists. How much of that is different from the job you have done before? Odds are, not much. A number of our daily tasks are variations on something.
Don’t reinvent the wheel every time you start something fresh. Use templates–as starting point for new work standardized files with formatting and text. Once you save another version of the template add, eliminate, or alter any data for that record, and you are going to have the new job completed in a fraction of this time.

Templates work everywhere: in word processors, spreadsheets, project management programs, survey programs, and email. Here’s the way to use templates in your favorite programs –and to automatically create documents from a template–so it’s possible to get your ordinary tasks done faster.

Templates take time to build, and it’s easy to wonder if they are worth the investment. The answer: absolutely. Editing a template takes much less time than formatting something from scratch. It is the distinction between retyping it, or copying and pasting some text.

That’s only one advantage: Using a template means you are less likely to leave out key information, too. For instance, if you need to send freelance authors a contributor arrangement, modifying a standard contract template (instead of writing a new contract every time) ensures you won’t leave out that crucial clause about possessing the content as soon as you’ve paid for it.

Templates also guarantee consistency. Maybe you send customers or investors regular job updates. Using a template, you understand the upgrade will always have the exact same formatting, layout, and standard arrangement.

How to Produce Great Templates

Not all templates are created equal–and some things don’t require a template. Here are a couple of tips to follow.
First, templates should be comprehensive. So err on the side of adding too instead of too small, it’s simpler to delete info than add it .
Imagine you’re developing a template of your resume. You would want to list in-depth facts about your responsibilities and achievements, and that means you’ll have all the information you want to submit an application for any job.

You can delete less-important notes on, but if it is not from the template you might forget it.

Some applications will automatically fill in all these factors for you (more on that in a little ). But should you have to fill in the information by yourself, add some text that’s simple and obvious to look for so you can find text that has to be changed without much work.
